Happy Memorial Day Weekend,

Memorial Day has taken on new meaning since starting CrossFit. Memorial Day has always been a special day for me. As many of you may or may not know my background, I was in the Army and deployed a few years back. Not only that I had amazing examples of sacrifice set by my older brother and my father. They both served in the military and were amazing examples to me of sacrifice.

When I started doing CrossFit one of my very first WODs was “Murph”. When I first did it I don’t think I truly understood the background story behind hero WODs and what they truly meant. The longer I did CrossFit the more I began to truly understand the significance of a Hero WOD. I know every one of us respect the sacrifice of our men and women in the armed forces. Before I served I always tried to go out of my way to thank a service member and now that I have served and have since got out I still try my best to show my thanks to the many men and women I now call brother and sister in the armed forces.

Even though we all have this gratitude towards these amazing people; it is very hard to find a way to show our gratitude. This is where Hero WODs come into play. Even though it’s not a lot and our thanks can never repay what these Heroes did for us, at least it is something we can do to let their families know that they are not forgotten. Hero WODs are made and named after individuals in the military or actually in any walk of life that could be considered a hero. It is named after an individual who sacrificed their life in order to protect the rights and freedoms of their people. It is a WOD that is there to help us remember their sacrifice.

These WODs are challenging and push us to the brink. They are WODs that about half way through you wonder why you even started it. That is when you think about that individual and his life and his sacrifice. That is when you push through. You dig deeper.

Tomorrow we will be doing “Murph”. Murph is named after┬áNavy Lieutenant Michael Murphy. Here’s a little bit about Lieutenant Murphy and why we do this WOD:

In memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005.

This workout was one of Mike’s favorites and he’d named it “Body Armor”. From here on it will be referred to as “Murph” in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.

If you have never watched Lone Survivor I highly recommend you get on iTunes or VidAngel and watch it tonight before you come in and complete this WOD. Murphy was leading his team through the hills of Afghanistan when they were attacked. They were surrounded 100 to 1. They fought their way out but out of the 4 Seals only one survived. Murphy’s last act was to climb to the top of a ledge and send out a final distress signal and location and because of this they were able to save Marcus Luttrell… The Lone Survivor. It is a gut-wrenching story but having that survivor we are able to see what these heroes truly sacrificed for each other and for us.

Every year I am honored to complete these Hero WODs. They are always intimidating but when we finish them they are always satisfying. I hope that you all can start your Memorial Day off with us at The Point. If you have any friends who would like to join you please bring them along and let them suffer with you.

Tomorrow the box will open at 7 AM. We will allow people to start Murph until 10 AM. So come in anytime between 7-10 and get your Memorial Day started off right.
