1. How long have you been at The Point?
I started at The Point on December 16th, 2013. Yes, it is celebrated like it’s my birthday.
2. What do you do for a living?
Full time mom, and I love it. It’s crazy, and challenging, and hands down the most rewarding thing I do. Right after that it’s coaching. I love training here at The Point, and do that a couple times a week. Before that I was a massage therapist, but “CrossFit hands” kind of put that career to rest.
3. Prior to finding CrossFit what did you do for physical exercise?
I played sports all through high school. Volleyball was my favorite. After I got married I did the whole running thing. Started with 5k’s, and have now done various races all the way up to a 50k.
4. If you had to pick your favorite accomplishment during your CrossFit journey so far, what would it be?
Every pr is one to be celebrated, and my most recent one is getting ring muscle ups. However, the element that CrossFit has brought into my life that has had the most impact on me is NUTRITION. I have been missing it my whole life. I have learned that no matter how hard I work, it will only take me so far unless I am fueling my body. It is empowering, it is just as challenging (if not more for some people) as the workouts, and gaining the knowledge and having control over that aspect of my life is a huge accomplishment.
5. What is one piece of advice you could give new CrossFitters that you wish you knew before you began?
Form, form, form! It prevents injury, which is huge. But, even more than that, you have to build a base. And if you try to skip ahead and lift that weight you haven’t really moved forward. Or if you kip those pull ups without a strict one you are missing the strength. And in the end, you will be going back to basics so that you can keep progressing. So, save yourself that time! Focus on your form, never comprise for the easier way! Be consistent and you will see consistent results!
6. What is your favorite movement in CrossFit?
I love olympic lifting. It’s the perfect balance between technique and strength. I have loved learning about it, I love coaching it, and it is by far my favorite. Any snatch, or clean & jerk day is going to be a good day.
7. What is your favorite all time WOD you have done?
Benchmark WOD, I love Grace. But there was a Wednesday WOD not too long ago that had snatches that progressively got heavier, and also had some kb swings and DU’s in the mix. It was a good one.
8. What are your goals for the upcoming year?
The longer I CrossFit, the longer that list gets! But, honestly, I want to be able to effectively demonstrate and coach every movement. Along with that, a bodyweight snatch will be awesome, clean and jerk 200 lbs, and a 3:30 Fran time.
9. Before starting CrossFit what was your view of CrossFit? How has that changed since joining?
I really didn’t know about CrossFit. I knew I was going to be using a barbell, and that was completely foreign, but I didn’t have feelings for or against it in any way. And since joining I’m not quite sure how people live without this stuff!
10. Give me a brief summary of your CrossFit journey thus far.
So 3 years in, and again, I don’t know what I would do without it. Being an athlete (and probably even more influential, coming from a family of 12 kids!), I have always loved competition. After high school the opportunity just wasn’t there. I did what so many people do, I just decided running was the only way I could fulfill that part of my life. But running was so boring! Day after day of the same thing. I felt healthy, but I didn’t really look forward to it. My husband has always loved lifting, and he wanted to try out CrossFit. Our friends (Thayne and Nicole Sohm!) had talked about how much they loved Crossfit The Point, and then there was a Groupon. We did it, and looked forward to going every single day. It was challenging, and I could be competitive with myself everyday, and even do competitions at any level and get what I had been missing for so long! I CrossFit a year and realized I wanted to coach. So I went and got Level 1 Certified. Since then I took a level 1 USAW olympic weightlifting course and became certified it that as well. Most recently I took the scaling course, and I love that I can see how scaling, for every athlete, is a way to improve! Looking forward to many more years of CrossFit, and many more years here at The Point (because you all are SO AMAZING)!
