Good Morning CFTP,
So last fall I got back into playing soccer on an outdoor soccer team. I went out to the game about a half hour early and “warmed up”, kicked the ball around and then the game started. I felt great! It felt like my old college days! I was sprinting faster or as fast as ever due to the work I have put in at the gym over the years and I felt at home on the field.
Then half time came around… Something wasn’t right. I started to feel this tightness in both my hamstrings. With the adrenaline from the first half I hadn’t noticed but I had pulled both my hamstrings during one of my early sprints. I tried to tough out the next half but ended up coming out because I was pretty much useless on the field.
The lesson I learned from this experience is that for one, I am not in my twenties anymore. I can’t just get out of my car and start playing like the old days. The second thing I learned is that I need a proper warmup and I need a warmup that mimics what I will be doing in the game. I need a warmup that is designed specifically for what I might encounter in the activity I am doing.
This goes for us each and every day. When we come into the gym we must get our body ready for what we are about to put it through. This past week I have implemented more group warmups to help us do this and we will continue to do this in order to truly get you ready for what’s ahead each and every day.
What do I ask of you? First of all, BE ON TIME or EARLY! I know that sometimes circumstances prevent this but make a concerted effort to be on time so that you are there for when we start the warmup. We are starting the warmup right at the start of class time. Another thing is to actually participate in the warmup. The warmups we design for the day are designed to get you ready. This might mean that you are doing the exact movements as you will be doing in the workout. Listen to the trainer. If you are coming to the class you must join the class in the warmup. When you come to class and sit on the bikes or talk in the corner or are doing your own thing then that takes away and distracts the class from getting a proper warmup. If you come to any class besides open gym at noon then you are expected to join the class in the warmup and WOD.
Our goal at The Point is to give everyone a chance to get proper training and to get a good workout each and every day and we need your help to do this. Our training team takes their job seriously and wants to coach you but you must do your part and you must be willing to listen and willing to learn. If you feel you don’t need the coaching (we all need coaching), then it is your responsibility to allow the rest of the class to get the coaching they are paying for.
We are always striving to bring you the best possible atmosphere and experience each and every day. I hope you all can feel that and you all will continue to be like sponges and suck up as much knowledge as possible.
This week’s spotlight is Keith Wheadon! He is leaving us in about a month to move up north to Layton. 🙁
1. How long have you been at The Point? I think it’s been 3 years this May!2. What do you do for a living? I work in the Dental Consulting field. We show dental offices how to take better care of their patients.
3. Prior to finding CrossFit what did you do for physical exercise? I ran 1/2 marathons, basketball, soccer… Both Indoor and outdoor.
4. If you had to pick your favorite accomplishment during your CrossFit journey so far, what would it be? It might sound silly, but I have never forgotten the day when Ben Hiatt worked with me after class to get my first rope climb. Proud moment for me, as I’m not good with heights.
5. What is one piece of advice you could give new CrossFitters that you wish you knew before you began? I think I would suggest to pick the weights and movements that are right for you. Early on, I would let my ego get in the way of what was best for me. Sometimes RX weight is counterproductive if you spend a lot of time resting between reps.
6. What is your favorite movement in CrossFit? I love the clean & jerk. It’s something I’ve steadily gotten stronger at, and fun to see results in.
7. What is your favorite all time WOD you have done? I don’t remember alot of WODs, rather I remember the ones that were torture! I do remember one WOD that was challenging and fun…. Running Annie!
8. What are your goals for the upcoming year? I’m hoping to continue crossfit with Wasatch crossfit in Layton, and just keep working on my weaknesses, and continue to be healthy.
9. Before starting CrossFit what was your view of CrossFit? How has that changed since joining? I had no preconceived idea of crossfit. I played basketball with a guy who did it, and remember thinking how strong he was! He inspired me to check into it, and recommended CFTP.
10. Give me a brief summary of your CrossFit journey thus far. This is where I’d like for you to share your story…
Coach Wheeler: “Hits a wod in loafers like no one else.”
Coach LaDee: “Justin (I mean Keith)…quiet but driven. Even through injuries, Keitg consistently comes and modifies where he needs to. So coachable and fun to have in class. Gonna miss him for sure at 5:30 am.”
Coach JoAnn: “I haven’t had the chance to coach Keith consistently in a while, but I know he’s there and working hard! My lasting impression of Keith has nothing to do with crossfit though, it is the kind of person he is. When my daughter was having a hard time breathing and I was looking for a nebulizer quickly, Keith just dropped one off at the gym and said I could have it. Every time we use it I remember his kindness and generosity. He’s a great example to me how CFTP is family.”
Coach Leslie: “Keith is just great! I haven’t really coached him but I was able to coach his boys for a bit. Keith is such a good example to them and was always there to support them.”
