Good Afternoon CFTP,
I learned a life lesson today in the middle of completing 19.3… First off, I’ve been putting off doing 19.3 as long as I could but, life lesson #1, “Just because you put something off, doesn’t mean the task just disappears! Eventually, you’re going to have to get it done.”
So that was the first lesson learned from Wasatch Championships WOD 19.4. Lesson 2 came about 9 minutes into the workout. As I looked at the clock at around 9 minutes and realized that there was a good possibility I was going to get my pre-WOD goal of 10+ rounds… I immediately felt my effort wane. It was actually quite incredible. Yes, I was tired and that definitely had something to do with my slow in pace but big reason I slowed down is because I felt I had accomplished my goal so it was ok to slow down.
It’s interesting how our mind works. This was a huge eye opening experience for me. We all set goals, whether consciously or subconsciously, in life and many times, when we accomplish the goals we set, we just stop. No matter where we are at in the spectrum of life, even if we feel we could blow our goal out of the water, as soon as we accomplish a goal we tend to slow down because we have accomplished what we set out to do.
It reminds me of an Office episode. At the beginning of the year, the whole office set different goals and Creed’s goal was to do a perfect cartwheel. So Michael Scott worked with Creed on week one of his goal until… Boom!
I love how Creed just stands there after his triumph as if to say, now I don’t have to do anything else all year long.
Goals are a funny thing. I believe they push us to be better and they push us past what we think is possible. But sometimes goals can also make us lazy. Sometimes we set a 3 month goal and all of the sudden at week 3 you realize that the goal we set was much easier than expected but instead of setting a new more challenging goal, we stick to the original goal and while the original goal has made us better, a new more challenging goal would have created a path to even greater success.
I have loved watching you during the Wasatch Championships Competition. It’s so fun competing along side you and you all truly inspire me to push harder and reach further.
I look forward to this final week of these Online Qualifiers and I also look forward to an exciting upcoming announcement about the 2019 CrossFit Open that will be coming up in 3 weeks! Stay tuned for next Sunday’s spotlight to see what’s different about this year’s open with all of the changes headquarters has made.
